The Phantom of Longing
I thought time had cooled it down,
smoothed the edges, spun me round,
tucked that feeling out of sight,
thought I’d left it in the night.
Then out of nowhere,
no warning sign,
it slips right back
and messes with my mind.
Phantom of longing,
creeping in again,
quiet like a shadow,
moving under my skin.
I thought you were gone,
I thought I was free—
some things can be let go
and still never leave.

The Phantom of Longing
I thought time had softened it,
dulled its edges,
taught it how to sleep.
Then suddenly, without warning,
it creeps back in—
quietly,
as though it had never left.
That is the cruelty of longing:
it never announces its return.
It only creeps closer
when you think you are safe,
and reminds you
that some things can be let go
without ever truly leaving.
