Oftentimes, when we feel triggered, we respond in an escalated way without realizing that we're not just responding to what's happening in the moment. We're responding based upon all the things we've experienced that have caused us to feel that way before.
As a result of everything that's going on beneath the surface (i.e., "the previous experiences"), we may lose touch with our current reality without even realizing what's happening.
Sometimes, after we calm down (i.e., our nervous system returns to a deactivated state), we may realize what happened, but we may not understand why we reacted in the way we did, or if we do, we may feel too vulnerable sharing with the other person/people where that response is coming from.
The key to getting a handle on your triggers is to do the work needed to find out "what" is being triggered. Is it fear of something (rejection, deceit, loss)? Is it a hope for something (connection, safety, relief)? If you can see a trigger as an indicator that lights up to tell you something needs your attention, you'll be able to trouble shoot and heal the circumstance that's causing your body to go into hyper drive and overreact as it tries to protect you from taking the same hit you took in your past.
