The banner of polyamorous love
Polyamorous love is not a sexual orientation, but an identity recognition, usually referring to the situation where multiple romantic relationships are established with multiple people at the same time and both parties agree.
The original Diversity Love Pride flag was created by Jim Evans in 1995, who hoped that the Diversity Love community would have a symbol or image similar to other flags used by the LGBTQ+community to tightly unite the community.
Let's take a look at the meanings represented by each color below:
Blue: symbolizes openness and honesty between us and all partners who have established multiple relationships.
Red: represents love and passion.
Black: Express support for those who, despite being open and honest with all relationship participants, have to conceal these relationships from the outside world due to social pressure.
Gold: It indicates that we value emotional attachment to others, which can be friendly or romantic, rather than just limited to physical relationships.
In November 2022, over 30000 multi cornered lovers participated in a vote to select a new flag design. In the end, the design by London queer multimedia designer Red Howell stood out. This flag is very beautiful! It contains a golden heart, a white V-shaped pattern, and three colors of blue, magenta, and purple. A lot of time, effort, and passion were invested in the design and production process.
White V-shape: The white V-shape represents possibilities, encompassing both non monogamous relationships and heralding a bright future for polyamorous relationships. Polymorphs face stigma and discrimination in marriage, adoption, guardianship, access to insurance, and other systemic aspects that are related to other identity factors such as race, gender, and sexual orientation. The V-shape points to the other end of the flag, representing both progress and asymmetry, symbolizing the beauty of non-traditional styles of polyamorous relationships.
golden heart: This is my favorite part of the design. Who doesn't crave to have a flag with a heart? This heart reminds us that the core of non monogamy is diverse and complex love. Gold represents vitality and perseverance, driving greater acceptance and structural support for diverse partners and families.
magenta: In the tricolor flag, magenta represents desire, love, and attraction. For asexual and unromantic individuals, these are independent elements that may or may not overlap. This is precisely where the recognized norms of polyamorous love and monogamy conflict. People generally believe that it is possible to date and have sexual relations with multiple people at the same time within a vague period of time, but once it crosses into a romantic relationship or falls in love with multiple people, it violates social rules! This flag represents various forms of love.
Blue: The first stripe of the tricolor flag is blue, symbolizing openness and honesty. Communication is the core of moral non monogamy and all healthy relationships. Similarly, this color has a dual meaning. Due to the stigma of polyamorous relationships, many people do not have the right to share their identity, and the polyamorous community is striving to create a more open future.
Purple: Purple stripes represent a united non monogamous community. This is also a tribute to the previous communities whose non monogamous cultural customs were colonized and erased.
